The following are suggestions and rules for games to play in our Discord channel: #text-games
1. 20 Questions
To play the 20 questions texting game, one player must pick something from their imagination; it could be an object, place, or even an obscure celebrity. Then your friends will try to guess the object you chose in 20 “Yes or No” Questions or less.
2. Kiss, Marry, Kill
To play the Kiss, Marry, Kill, you will select three people (they can be anyone from mutual friends to A-List celebrities) and your friends have to choose which one to kiss, which one to marry, and which one to kill.
3. Would You Rather?
“Would You Rather” is also known as “either-or” and “this or that.” The Would You Rather game requires you and your friends to pick one of two difficult choices, i.e. "Would you rather be rich or famous?"
4. Never Have I Ever
This texting game is a great way to get to know people or learn more about your friends. The rules to the game are as follows: A deed beginning with “Never have I” is read.
No lies! I.e. "Never have I ever gone to the bathroom and not wash my hands."
5. Word Unscramble
This texting game is the closest to Scrabble! You pick a word, and then your friends have to come up with other words that could be formed using the letters from the selected word.
6. Story Time
In this texting game, you and your friends will make up a story – one sentence at a time. One person starts the story with a line. The other player adds to the story with another line. This game can go on for as long as the players want or when the story comes to a logical stopping point.
7. Unpopular Opinions
In this fun game, you and your friends will take turns sharing your unpopular opinion on various topics like restaurants or hit movies and commenting on each other’s opinions.
8. Take a Trip
Start this texting game by writing “I am going to ____ and I am taking ____.” Both you and your friends have to finish this sentence by filling the blanks with words starting with the letter A and working through the alphabet until you get to the letter “Z”.
9. Gun to Your Head
In this fun texting game, you ask your friends what they would do if a gun were pointed to their head. For example: “Gun to your head, which celebrity event would you sneak into?” The rules are you cannot attack your attacker and you have to answer the question.
10. Questions Only
This texting game is a great way to pass time with friends. All the participants can only ask each other questions—nothing else! When asked a question, you can only reply with another question and you cannot repeat a question that’s already been asked. If someone takes too long to answer, they are out.
11. Where’s Your Location?
To begin this texting game, examine your surroundings, and notice that make it unique (like a coffee table, a chalkboard, or an espresso machine). Your friend guesses where you might be, using your hints as stuff to go off of. You can be as vague or specific as you like. This game is like iSpy except you’re describing a location instead of an object.
12. Let’s Get Personal
This game is a personal trivia question that starts with the first person texting a personal question to rest. The questions can be the type of questions that are asked in a job interview, but you can get even more personal with your friends if you are wanting to know them even better. This game is perfect for learning more about each other, and you might even be surprised at how easy it is to answer the questions when you are not face-to-face. This can be any type of questions, such as: "What is your biggest fear?" "What is your greatest regret?" "What hurt you most in the past?"
13. I spy
This is the classic I Spy, a game that has been a favorite of families for generations. Surely we have all whiled away a long car journey as a child playing this. And the version played via text or chat is just as much fun.
Look around your environment until your mind's eye fixes on something in particular. You might want to tell them where you are, as a clue. Your friends then have to guess what it is you have spied, with only the first letter of the object to guess from.
14. Truth or Lie
There is always a very “human” need to keep certain details from family and friends. This is especially true, say most mental health experts, when people are placed in a group of strangers. The result is something that is trending online called “Truth or Lie.” The goal is to share a “truth” and a “lie” with a group so as to inform and entertain. The participants can also make several statements and then ask the group what they think is true or untrue? In turn, the true and false answers are later revealed during a fun and casual sharing meeting.
15. Truth or Dare
If you feel like playing truth or dare over text is restrictive, you could skip dares and just play truths!
16. Who Am I?
Choose a person, perhaps it would be someone you all know, or maybe a celebrity. Start by texting your friends with something the person would say. You can vary the rules by setting a time limit, a point scale, or a number of guesses. This can be an entertaining game when describing people everyone knows.
17. Send me a number and I'll answer it honestly
This is usually done via Instagram. Someone would give 25, 50 or 100 questions. They pick a number (question) and you have to answer it honestly. You can google "Send me a number and I'll answer it honestly" for questions/suggestions.
